Forging & Steel

The blade uses kobuse forging, the classic Japanese method that wraps a hard outer steel around a softer, shock-absorbing core. Here it combines T10 steel with a clay-tempered Damascus hamon, the temper line born in the quench and the folded grain running beneath it. A cross-ground edge gives exceptional resilience and a precise, lasting cutting line. The blade is full-tang — every part of it built for real use, not the cabinet.

Kobuse is the lamination most associated with classical Japanese smithing: a hard outer jacket of steel is folded around a softer core so the finished blade is keen at the edge yet able to flex and absorb shock rather than shatter. Married here to a clay-tempered Damascus exterior and a cross-ground edge, it produces a blade that performs as hard as it looks. At 104 cm overall the Yūkan’na is balanced for demanding tameshigiri, and the gilded copper-and-silver fittings over green shagreen signal a top-tier sword meant for the practitioner who has outgrown lesser steel.

Fittings

The tsuba is pure copper set with carved gilded silver. The saya is green solid wood covered in shagreen skin, and the tsuka is wrapped in genuine shagreen leather, the whole mounting tuned to the seriousness of the blade.

Is it battle-ready?

Emphatically yes. Kobuse-forged, clay-tempered and cross-ground, the Yūkan’na is a high-performance cutting sword built for the practitioner who wants a genuine master’s blade. See the full katana collection, or compare with master-tier pieces like the Katana Kengen and the Katana Kujaku.
