Taiyou (太陽) means the sun — the rising disc at the heart of Japan’s own name. This tanto carries that brightness in miniature: a compact, high-carbon short blade with a temper line that catches the light, built to the same standards as a full-length sword.

Forging & Steel

The Taiyou is forged from T10 tool steel and differentially hardened, which lays a genuine hamon along the edge — the misty line where the hard cutting surface meets the softer spine. T10 brings toughness and edge stability to the short format, so this is a real blade rather than a letter-opener: sharp, resilient and properly mounted. Despite the short format nothing here is cut down in quality: the same differential quench, the same full tang and the same fitted furniture you would expect on a katana. Keep the edge lightly oiled and it stays a genuine working blade rather than a desk ornament.

Fittings & Mounts

A carved copper tsuba and copper menuki dress the mount, with a bamboo mekugi pinning the tang. The saya is lacquered ebony with a bull-horn kurigata, and the tsuka is wrapped in genuine stingray leather.

Is it battle-ready?

Yes. The differentially hardened T10 blade is sharpened and full-tang — a functional tanto for collectors and a natural companion to a matching katana or wakizashi. At 55 cm overall it sits naturally beside a katana and wakizashi to complete a traditional three-blade display, or stands alone as a compact collector’s piece. Explore the wider tanto collection, and pair it with the entry Katana Rei or the Damascus Wakizashi Ao.
